PRACTICES

Cultivating your Inner Life in an Age of Distraction

It’s no secret that we live in a fast paced world. If we don’t become more efficient, produce more, get ahead and stay ahead, then it seems our culture will certainly leave us behind. But as our outer lives continue to expand and upgrade, our inner lives are lost and neglected. We are living for the Kingdom, but are we creating space for our hearts to live with the King?

For followers of Jesus on a mission to create, renew and influence culture, the tendency to strive and fill our days with business can be tempting. We spend ourselves to make a difference, but in the midst of all our tireless work and busyness, it is easy to drift away from the foundation of our faith. Without even noticing it, we become disconnected from God and our rootedness in our First Love.

On February 28th, 2012, ninety-nine cultural leaders will have the opportunity to learn from a sage on cultivating the inner life, Eugene Peterson. Practices promises to provide two amazing days of interaction, learning and conviction filled moments. Many have read his works, but few understand the depths of Eugene Peterson—renowned pastor, author, scholar and poet—and how he has spent his life living theology instead of just thinking about it.

As a select participant in Practices, you will:
  • Discover ways to practice the Sabbath in a culture that values productivity
  • Uncover the power of simplicity in a consumer-driven economy that says more is better
  • Discover the blessings of managing technology and enjoying intentional solitude in a digital age
  • Recover the joy of being immersed in scripture instead of overwhelmed by entertainment
  • Discover how to live a rhythm of prayer amid the busyness of modern pressures and life
  • And much, much more

Our time together will platform and emphasize the learned wisdom of Eugene Peterson. His famed phrase that faithfulness is “long obedience in the same direction” will be on display for each participant to see first-hand. Gabe Lyons will host each session and personalize interactive interviews with Eugene in larger, exploratory and participatory sessions. Participants will be given the opportunity to interact, question and ask specific questions of Eugene within this small, intimate environment.

Throughout the reflective schedule, time will be given for self-analysis, commitments and group interaction that allows the ideas discussed to become practical realities for those in attendance.

Cultural renewal is only possible when leaders are equally committed to personal renewal. This facet of our lives must be cultivated in order to sustain what God may want to do in our lifetimes.
